From My Craft Fair Booth to Your Cat's Favorite Toy: The Story Behind My Cat Toys

As a creator, one of the best parts of attending craft fairs is getting to meet all of you and hear your stories. For a long time, I kept hearing a similar refrain from cat owners who would stop by my booth: "I love your mini creations, but my cat would play with it!" My mini potted string of pearls plant, in particular, seemed to be a favorite among the feline crowd.

I began thinking about these customers. They wanted to take home a piece of my work, but they also wanted something for their beloved fur babies. It got me thinking: what if I could create something for both them and their cats? My mission became clear: to make a cat toy that was not only adorable but also interactive and, most importantly, durable. I got so tired of hearing about flimsy toys that just didn't hold up. I knew I could do better.

My Process: Crafted for Durability and Fun

I wanted to make a toy that would be a genuine treat, not something that would get torn to shreds in two minutes. The secret is in the needle felting technique, which creates incredible durability.

I started prototyping with my first designs, the fish and the mouse. I would begin by sewing a generous 1-teaspoon mesh bag of catnip, because, let’s be honest, catnip makes toys more interactive and entertaining for much longer. Next, I would wrap it in core wool, meticulously shaping the wool and needle felting it securely around the catnip. Then, I would wrap the entire thing in acrylic wool, needle felting it with an extra tight tension to ensure even the most determined kitty couldn't tear it apart.

Once I had a durable and adorable design, I had some of my favorite fur-parents test them out. I wanted to make sure they would hold up and that they were interactive. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive!

The Result: Happy Cats and Happy Customers

I have since expanded the line to include jellyfish and I am always looking for new designs! I take pride in the fact that these aren't mass-produced items. Each one is a labor of love, made to last. The time and care I put into crafting each toy is a huge part of its value, and it's what makes them stand out from the cheap toys you can find at the store.

Another little secret to my toys is that you can refresh the catnip! Just sprinkle a little catnip dust on them to make them like new.

I believe that all of my cherished pieces, whether for us or our fur babies, should be made with intention. My cat toys and cozy blankets are all crafted with the same love, care, and attention to detail.
